A Native Mac Project Management App: What Native Means, and Why It Matters

A native Mac project management app is one built with Apple's own frameworks, not a web page running inside a desktop frame. Kavanah's Mac app is native: it is written in SwiftUI, draws every screen itself, and talks to the same Kavanah API as the web app. It needs macOS 15 or later, runs on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, and is signed and notarized by Apple. If your Mac is on macOS 11 to 14, the older classic app is still on the download page.

1. Native vs Web Wrapper, in One Paragraph

A web wrapper ships the website inside an app. Tauri, a popular framework for building them, describes its apps as taking advantage of the web view already available on every user's system. Microsoft's WebView2 documentation puts these hybrid apps in the middle of a spectrum, between the reach of the web and the power of a native app. A native app sits at the far end: it is built from the platform's own controls. Apple describes SwiftUI as a way to build apps across all Apple platforms with one set of tools and APIs. Neither approach is wrong. Kavanah's Windows and Android apps are wrappers today, and say so. On the Mac, where people spend whole days in the tool, we built it native.

2. What Native Buys You on a Mac

Mostly, the Mac's own habits. Command-N creates a task from anywhere. Command-K searches everything. Command-T opens a tab, so a board, a deal and an agent conversation can each keep a tab in one window. Command-J shows the AI agent panel beside whatever you are looking at, and Command-1 to Command-9 jump straight to the dashboard, My Work, projects, the agent, messages, notifications, the inbox, deals and the calendar. A menu bar item shows your unread messages, notifications, tasks and inbox, runs the time tracker, and has New Task and Ask AI buttons. The Dock icon carries an unread badge.

3. Signed, Notarized and Self-Updating

Apple says Gatekeeper is designed to ensure only trusted software runs on your Mac, that macOS checks a Developer ID signature to verify software is from an identified developer and has not been altered, and that a notarized app is one Apple checked for malicious software and found none. Kavanah's Mac app is both signed and notarized, so it opens like any other app. It then keeps itself current: it checks for a new version in the background every six hours, and before installing one it verifies that the downloaded app is signed by Kavanah's own Apple developer team, so a tampered download is refused.

4. Every Page, Not a Highlight Reel

The native app is measured page by page against the web app: the task board and task detail, My Work, triage, planning, the AI agent and its scheduled runs, automations, the Deal Room, clients, inbox, calendar, knowledge, reports, time tracking and settings each have a native screen that reads and writes what the web page does. A few things deliberately open in your browser instead: the client portal, public share links, and the help docs. Signing in uses Kavanah's real sign-in page inside the app, because that page carries bot protection a native form cannot.

5. What It Does Not Do

It does not keep an offline copy of your workspace. Every screen reads and writes the live workspace, which is what keeps the Mac, your phone and the web in agreement, and it means the app needs a connection. It needs macOS 15; older Macs get the classic app, which is the same web app in a desktop window and updates itself on launch. And it is downloaded from kavanah.ai as a disk image, so there is no store account involved.

If you live in your project tool, a native Mac app is the difference between a website you keep open and an app that behaves like the rest of your Mac. Download it, or the classic app for older Macs, from the Kavanah download page.

Kavanah's Windows app is a free beta for 64-bit Windows 10 and 11. It is not code-signed yet, so Windows will probably warn you. Here is why SmartScreen does that, how to proceed safely, and what the app does and does not do yet.
