RACI chart generator
A RACI chart lists the tasks of a project down the side and the people across the top, and marks each cell Responsible, Accountable, Consulted or Informed. Build yours below: it checks that every task has exactly one Accountable person and at least one Responsible, and exports to CSV or Markdown.

#The method
How a RACI chart works
R, Responsible: does the work. A, Accountable: owns the outcome and signs it off. C, Consulted: gives input before the work is done, a two-way conversation. I, Informed: is told after a decision or milestone, one way.
Two rules make a RACI chart useful rather than decorative, and this generator checks both. Exactly one Accountable per task, because two owners means nobody is sure who decides. At least one Responsible, because a task with an owner and nobody doing it is a wish. A/R marks the common case where the owner also does the work; it counts toward both rules.
Pick a role in each cell: blank, R, A, A/R, C or I. Watch the per-person counts too: someone Accountable for most rows is a bottleneck, and a long list of Consulted people is usually a slow task.
- Accountable rule
count(A or A/R) = 1, for every taskZero or two-plus is flagged on the row.
- Responsible rule
count(R or A/R) ≥ 1, for every taskConsulted and Informed never satisfy either rule.
#Questions
Frequently asked questions
- What does RACI stand for?
- Responsible, Accountable, Consulted and Informed. Responsible people do the work, the Accountable person owns the outcome and approves it, Consulted people give input before the work is done, and Informed people are kept up to date afterwards.
- Can a task have more than one Accountable person?
- No. A RACI chart should have exactly one Accountable person per task, so there is always one person who makes the final call. If two people seem to share ownership, split the task or decide which of them signs off.
- Can the same person be Responsible and Accountable?
- Yes, and on small teams it is common. Mark the cell A/R. It satisfies both rules for that task.
- What is the difference between Consulted and Informed?
- Consulted is two-way and happens before the work is finished: their input can change it. Informed is one-way and happens after: they are told the result. Keep the Consulted list short, because every name on it is someone the task waits for.
- How do I get my RACI chart into a spreadsheet or document?
- Download it as CSV and open it in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers, or copy it as a Markdown table and paste it into a wiki, README or document editor that accepts Markdown.
#How Kavanah does it
How Kavanah tracks who does what
In Kavanah, the roles a RACI chart writes down live on the task itself. A task can have several assignees, and an approval sends the work to a named reviewer who approves it, rejects it or asks for changes, so the sign-off is recorded rather than implied.
Access is set per project and per task, so Informed can mean what it says. People are pulled in with @mentions in comments and discussions, which notify them where the work is.
